The Makini School started in 1978 as a nursery school with just eight children in a three-bedroom house. In 1981, the Makini Primary School was built. Today, Makini School has evolved into an academy with over 1,200 students on three separate campuses. They include Makini Pre-School, Makini Primary School and Makini

Secondary School. It also has a commercial college, Makini College.

Makini School offers the 8-4-4 educational system with class pupils sitting the Kenya Certificate of Education (K.C.P.E) and Form 4 students the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.).

Makini has consistently produced fine graduates as is evidenced by its performance in National examinations. For instance when it first presented candidates for K.C.P.E in 1985, it emerged 8th in Nairobi.

By 1993 the school was performing even better, posting first position provincially and 2nd countrywide. Since 2000, Makini has always been in the top 3 schools in the country, being No 1 three times. In addition, Makini has made history by producing the top girl in the country 3 years consecutively: in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Makini stands out as different on account of the many pioneering schemes and strategies, which have been adapted by others in Kenya. In that regard, Makini offers free counseling and guidance to upcoming institutions in an effort to improve the quality of education everywhere.
